Amethyst, with its rich purple color, is among the most valuable types of quartz. It is found in geodes of volcanic rock. This gem has long been associated with healing , wisdom and levelheadedness. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word for "not drunken" since in antiquity these crystals were thought to protect from intoxication. Amethyst is also February's birthstone.
